How Many Anki Reviews Are Too Many for Spanish?
You have too many Anki reviews when the review queue stops supporting Spanish and starts replacing it. There is no universal number. The warning sign is that reviews consume the time and energy you need for real reading or listening.
Spacing and retrieval are well-supported memory principles (Cepeda et al. 2006; Roediger & Butler 2011). Kim and Webb’s meta-analysis also supports spaced practice for second-language learning (Kim & Webb 2022).
But good science does not mean unlimited cards.
Signs you have too many reviews
You may have review debt if:
- Anki takes longer than your reading
- you dread opening the deck
- you fail cards because you are tired
- you add words you do not care about
- you stop meeting words in real Spanish
Fix the system
Try:
- new cards set to zero for a week
- delete or suspend low-value cards
- keep only sentence cards
- save fewer new words
- read before adding cards
The point of SRS is to bring useful Spanish back at the right time. If it becomes a wall, lower the volume.
A practical limit
Choose a daily review limit that leaves room for reading. If you have 30 minutes, do not spend all 30 on cards. Ten minutes of review plus twenty minutes of Spanish input is often healthier.
